(some) Reasons People Self-Diagnose

  • Don’t have enough money to get official diagnosis
  • Worried about discrimination for being transgender
  • Worried about discrimination because of their race
  • Afraid of reaction from friends or family
  • Worried about difficulties getting a job after diagnosis
  • Bad previous experience
  • Anxiety hindering their ability to go get diagnosed
  • They realize that having a degree does not completely absolve you of all the ableism you’ve learned your entire life
  • Don’t have the courage to admit that they have a mental illness except on the internet towards a bunch of strangers who have similar problems to them and therefore aren’t as likely to judge them
  • Worried about not being taken seriously
  • Worried about getting diagnosed wrong (again, having a degree does not make you all knowing)
  • Ableism
  • Ableism

  • Are you even neuroatypical?
  • How do you not know this?
